Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a condition in which near objects appear clear while distant objects appear blurry. This occurs when the eyeball is longer than normal from front to back or when the cornea is excessively curved, causing the image to be formed in front of the retina instead of directly on it. Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is a condition in which distant objects appear relatively clear while nearby objects appear blurry, particularly when reading or performing tasks that require close focus. This occurs when the eyeball is shorter than normal or when the cornea is less curved than necessary, causing the image to be formed behind the retina rather than directly on it.
The first time I felt the need to wear eyeglasses was about fifty years ago. When I put them on, I felt a great sense of relief as I saw everything more clearly, beautifully, and precisely. I used to think that eyeglasses were a relatively recent invention. In 1287, near Pisa, Italy, an unknown craftsman attached two glass lenses to a frame, probably made of wood or bone, creating what is believed to have been the first pair of eyeglasses.
Yet, the invention of eyeglasses is relatively recent in the context of human history. How did people with impaired vision manage before specialized optical shops existed? Humans used flat and convex lenses made of glass and rock crystal, dating back to the Bronze Age. One of the most famous examples is the Nimrud lens from Assyria. Ancient Egyptians possessed vision-enhancing devices as far back as 5,300 years ago, while ancient artifacts indicate that the Chinese were familiar with magnifying lenses.
The Arab optician Ibn al-Haytham played a significant role in the study of optics, which he explored extensively in his famous book, “Optics.” Italy is a global center for eyeglass manufacturing, particularly in the luxury eyewear sector. This is largely due to the country’s advanced precision industries, including glassmaking. However, mass production of eyeglasses began in the late 19th century. The industry emerged in a relatively small area around Belluno and Cadore, where an integrated network of factories, workshops, and suppliers developed.
This network covered the production of metal frames, hinges, coatings and polishes, molds, lenses, and design. Italy successfully linked eyewear to fashion, transforming eyeglasses into a staple of luxury brands and fashion houses and significantly increasing their value. Some of the leading countries and companies manufacturing prescription and contact lenses are based in Germany. Zeiss, a prominent name in the optics industry, operates a global production network, with its largest facility located in Guangzhou, China.
The Japanese brand HOYA has several production centers worldwide. Nikon lenses are used in cameras, binoculars, and laboratory microscopes. When purchasing reading glasses, it is important to prioritize lens quality rather than focusing solely on the frame. Choosing lenses made in Germany or Japan is worth considering. Ready-made reading glasses sold in pharmacies often lack identifiable brand names and are typically mass-produced in standard prescriptions rather than customized for each eye. Therefore, when buying inexpensive reading glasses, the material, optical quality, and coating can sometimes matter more than the brand name.
