Lebanese President Joseph Aoun

BEIRUT, April 17 — Joseph Aoun declared that negotiations are “not a weakness” as he reaffirmed Lebanon’s sovereignty in his first address following a U.S.-brokered ceasefire after weeks of conflict between Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah.

Striking a firm tone, Aoun said Lebanon must chart its own path forward, emphasizing his vision of a country “flourishing, not committing suicide.” He condemned Hezbollah’s rocket attacks into northern Israel that triggered the latest escalation, while also criticizing Iran for backing and arming the group.

The president described both actions as violations of Lebanese sovereignty and reiterated his commitment to disarm all non-state actors, including Hezbollah.

Responding to criticism from Hezbollah over Lebanon’s direct talks with Israel, Aoun insisted that Beirut’s decisions would reflect the will of the Lebanese people rather than external influence. “There will be no concessions to any principle, no infringement of the sovereignty of this country,” he said.

Aoun also renewed calls for Israel to cease military operations, withdraw its forces, release detainees, and facilitate the return of displaced civilians, signaling a push for stability following the fragile ceasefire.
