BEIRUT, July 3: Athletes under the age of 20 from across western Asia, including Kuwait, are vying for top honors as Lebanon opened the curtains on a regional athletics championship on Sunday, under the auspices of President Michel Aoun.

The event is an opportunity for Arab athletes to garner some limelight on an international scale, ahead of the world championships slated for August, said West Asian and Kuwaiti athletics federation chief Sayer Al-Enezi. Kuwait is among the frontrunners with a contingent of 23 athletes eager to do the nation proud, said federation secretary and team director Dr. Mane Al-Ajmi.

Lebanon’s hosting of an event of such magnitude at such a “critical juncture” is a testament to the support Beirut has from fellow Arab nations, according to Lebanese athletics federation chief Rollan Saada. Athletes from some nine countries, including host nation Lebanon and Gulf Arab states, are taking part in the championship.(KUNA)
