Kuwait's Jaber Hospital sets new benchmark with 30 kidney transplants in August
Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital achieves 30 successful kidney transplants in one month.

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 3: Kuwait’s Ministry of Health said on Tuesday it had achieved a medical milestone after doctors at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital performed 30 successful kidney transplants in August, nearly double the usual monthly average of 17.

In a statement, the ministry noted that the achievement underscores the capacity of Kuwait’s health system to expand and deliver complex, critical services with high efficiency. It added that the accomplishment strengthens the country’s position in the field of organ transplantation and improves the quality of specialized medical services for patients.

The ministry credited the success to joint efforts by several leading departments and centers, including the Organ Transplant Department at Jaber Hospital, the Kuwait Center for Kidney Diseases and Transplantation, the Organ Provision Program, and the Immunology and Kidney Transplant Laboratory at the Yacoub Behbehani Center.

It noted that close coordination between medical and technical teams at Jaber Hospital—including transplant surgeons, physicians, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, intensive care units, infection prevention and sterilization units, and blood laboratories—created a multidisciplinary model that ensured the program’s success.

The achievement builds on strategic initiatives launched under Health Minister Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadhi in recent years. In March 2024, the Organ Transplant Department was established at Jaber Hospital, followed by the Kuwait Center for Kidney Diseases and Transplantation in June. In September 2024, the National Kidney Transplant Program through Family Exchange was introduced.

These steps led to a record 149 successful kidney transplants in 2024, the ministry said, describing the latest results as a continuation of that momentum.

The ministry affirmed that the accomplishment reflects Kuwait’s commitment to providing world-class medical services for citizens and residents, while also highlighting the sector’s ability to keep pace with global developments in organ transplantation.

It added that the success represents a further step toward consolidating Kuwait’s role as a regional leader in advanced medical care and aligns with the objectives of Kuwait Vision 2035, which seeks to build a sustainable health system based on efficiency, quality, and innovation.
