KUWAIT CITY, Feb 16 : A specialized medical team at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital has successfully performed the first procedure of its kind in Kuwait to treat acute cholecystitis without open surgery. The intervention was led by Dr. Yousef Al-Shamali, Consultant of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy, using an advanced EUS-guided stenting technique that connects the gallbladder to the small intestine.
The procedure was carried out after a comprehensive assessment confirmed the patient was not fit for conventional surgery. Doctors opted for the minimally invasive approach, which proved safe and effective, helping to control inflammation, relieve symptoms and prevent potential complications while reducing the risks associated with anesthesia and open surgery. The patient’s condition improved steadily following the intervention, and she was later discharged in stable health.
The operation was conducted by an integrated team of gastroenterologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists and nursing staff, reflecting a coordinated multidisciplinary effort. Hospital Director and Head of the Internal Medicine Department, Dr. Nada Al-Hassan, said the achievement highlights the hospital’s high level of preparedness in terms of specialized medical expertise and advanced infrastructure. She noted that introducing such complex procedures locally opens new horizons for treating high-risk cases within the country and strengthens confidence in national healthcare services.
Dr. Al-Hassan added that the integration of medical specialties and ongoing institutional support have fostered a professional environment capable of adopting the latest global practices in advanced therapeutic endoscopy. She stressed the commitment to further expanding precise interventional procedures in line with international standards.
The gastroenterology team, led by Dr. Al-Shamali and Head of the Unit Dr. Talal Al-Taweel, expressed appreciation to Minister of Health Ahmed Al-Awadhi and Assistant Undersecretary for Supporting Medical Services Dr. Ahmed Abdulhafiz Al-Awadhi for their continued support in providing resources and advanced equipment to enhance healthcare services.
The cholecystoduodenostomy technique, performed through endoscopic ultrasound-guided stent placement, creates an internal drainage pathway between the gallbladder and the small intestine. It is considered a modern, minimally invasive option for patients who are not candidates for traditional surgery, offering an effective solution for managing acute inflammation while avoiding open surgical intervention.
