KUWAIT CITY, Jan. 11: The National Cancer Awareness Campaign (CAN) launched its annual thyroid cancer awareness initiative on Sunday under the slogan “Be Aware and Take Care,” aiming to raise public awareness and improve recovery rates.
In his opening remarks, CAN Chairman Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh highlighted that the campaign implements several initiatives each year to promote health awareness, particularly for cancers with early, detectable signs. He noted that early detection can lead to recovery rates of up to 90 percent and survival rates of 99.5 percent. Thyroid cancer primarily affects women, occurring two to three times more often than in men, he added.
Dr. Al-Saleh emphasized the campaign’s focus on encouraging a balanced lifestyle, including healthy nutrition and regular physical activity, and expressed hope that this year’s campaign will achieve its objectives.
Campaign coordinator Dr. Iman Al-Shammari said awareness is the cornerstone of combating thyroid cancer. She highlighted the use of lectures, brochures, and health centers to reach the public and provide simplified medical information.
This year’s campaign activities will take place in public hospitals and medical exhibitions, featuring lectures and programs to promote healthy lifestyles and immunity-boosting practices. Dr. Al-Shammari also announced the launch of the “Makin” club for cancer survivors, including a psychological rehabilitation program and additional supportive events.
The campaign is scheduled to run for one week, focusing on education, prevention, and community engagement.
