Kuwaiti women set to be allowed to work in places earlier declared ‘no go’ areas

PAM issues decision to amend some provisions

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 27: The Public Authority for Manpower has issued a decision to amend some provisions of the list of rules and procedures for granting work permits to women such as allowing them to work in several business fields, including oil, reports Al-Qabas daily. The administrative decision amends Article 26 of the regulations by adding the paragraph “excluded from the prohibition regarding the employment of female engineers and workers in the area of maintenance and works related to drilling and maintenance of wells of all kinds, works related to supervision, management, follow-up and operation that do not require strenuous physical effort.”

It is noteworthy that Article (26) of the list of rules and procedures for granting work permits states as follows: ‘It is prohibited to employ women of any age in the following industries: work in dyes, asbestos industry, chlorine and soda industry, asphalt industry work, work in quarries and mines, work in slaughterhouses, manufacture and handling of pesticides, work in front of melting and casting furnaces, handling of fireworks and related jobs, operation or maintenance of motor machinery, manufacture and repair of liquid electric batteries, work in the compost industry or its warehouses, manufacture of sand bricks and any industry where an employee is exposed to silica dust, heavy work that requires strenuous physical effort such as building, construction and firefighting, and dangerous manual work such as work related to maintenance and drilling of wells of all kinds, all work that requires the handling or use of lead, benzene, arsenic, phosphorous, or any of the substances listed in the list of occupational hazards.

The authority’s decision, which will be published in the Official Gazette “Kuwait Ailiyom” in its issue of Sunday, Sept 25, included “adding condition No. 7 to the conditions contained in Article No. 4 of the aforementioned list of rules and procedures for granting permission to work includes ‘submitting evidence of payment of all companies’ contributions to the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences.

Article No. 26 of the list of rules and procedures for granting work permission referred to has also been amended by adding the following paragraph: Article (4) Item No. (20) of the first category contained in Article No. (53) of the list of rules and procedures for granting work permission referred to shall be replaced by its text is as follows: “Veterinary activities licensed by the approved authorities.”
