KUWAIT CITY, Feb 2: The Kuwait Environment Protection Society on Monday underscored the importance of wetlands in maintaining ecological balance, supporting environmental security, and mitigating climate change, calling their protection a national obligation for achieving environmental sustainability.
Dr. Wafaa Behbehani, a member of the Society, made the remarks in a press release marking World Wetlands Day, observed annually on February 2. She highlighted that wetlands offer opportunities for sustainable ecotourism, including birdwatching, environmental photography, and educational programs, which help raise community environmental awareness and promote a green economy without harming sensitive ecosystems.
Dr. Behbehani noted the significance of the Ramsar Convention as a global framework for wetland conservation and biodiversity preservation. She pointed to Bubiyan Island as one of Kuwait’s most important wetlands, serving as a natural habitat for diverse species and a critical stopover for migratory birds along international migration routes.
She emphasized that wetlands are vital for birds, providing safe environments for feeding, resting, and breeding, and act as indicators of ecosystem health. Dr. Behbehani called for intensified national efforts to safeguard these areas, describing their protection as a long-term environmental investment.
