TOKYO, April 23, (KUNA): His Highness the Prime Minister of Kuwait Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah will pay an official visit to Japan from May 11, the Japanese government has announced. During his four-day visit, the premier will have an audience with Emperor Akihito and hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement last night. “The Japanese government sincerely welcomes the visit of the Prime Minister, and hopes that this visit will further strengthen the friendly relations between Japan and the State of Kuwait,” the ministry said. It will be his first visit to Japan since taking office in 2011.

The two leaders last met on the occasion of Abe’s visit to Kuwait in August 2013. “Kuwait is an important energy supplier for Japan, and the two countries have built a good relationship since establishing diplomatic relations in 1961,” Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Koichi Hagiuda told a press conference.

Japan has received maximum support from Kuwait, such as financial aid to tsunami-hit Sanriku Railway, in the wake of the 2011 earthquake-tsunami disaster that hit the northeastern region, said Hagiuda. “Japan hopes his visit will further deepen bonds and cooperative relations between the two countries,” he added. His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al- Mubarak visited here in 2004 and 2009 in his capacity as defense minister.
