DOHA, April 23: Sheikh Mohammad Ahmad Al-Sabah, Chairman of the Kuwait Artificial Intelligence for Things (AIoT) Society, emphasized the critical importance of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with human expertise in a systematic way to generate deeper insights and align policies with societal needs.

He made these remarks during his participation in a high-level session titled "Harnessing AI for Smart Governance and Sustainable Development in the GCC," which was part of the "Our Legacy Summit" that began today at Msheireb Downtown Doha. The summit is being held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned.

Sheikh Mohammad stressed that adopting a policy development model that combines specialized human knowledge with large language models (LLMs) is vital. He warned that failing to integrate AI with human expertise could lead to the uncontrolled and random application of AI tools like ChatGPT. Furthermore, he cautioned against complacency in keeping up with technological advancements and emphasized that governance bodies must ensure the responsible and safe use of AI tools in policymaking. This, he noted, requires an immediate and organized response to identify potential risks and implement effective mechanisms for mitigating them.

Sheikh Mohammad also highlighted the significant opportunity AI presents in helping GCC countries create pathways toward sustainable economies. He suggested that oil and gas revenues could be used as a lever for economic diversification, rather than as the primary foundation of the economy. AI, he pointed out, could also be leveraged to run long-term simulation models that measure the social, economic, and geopolitical impacts of proposed policies.

The "Our Legacy Summit," which kicked off yesterday, April 22, with the theme "Building Our Legacy: Sustainability, Innovation, and Traditional Knowledge," underscores Qatar's commitment to promoting sustainability in hot and arid environments. The summit also aims to leverage Qatar’s rich cultural heritage and unique ecosystems. It serves as a platform to explore how innovation and traditional knowledge can guide modern sustainability efforts and help shape a more resilient and inclusive future.
