SHARJAH, Nov 24: Kuwaiti artist Mahmoud Shaker unveiled his installation titled “Circle of Light” at the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park on Sunday, participating in the 26th Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival.
Shaker drew inspiration from this year’s festival theme, “Siraj” (lamp), highlighting the symbolism of light in Islamic arts and drawing upon sacred Quranic verses. The installation reflects the concept of guidance, spirituality, and illumination through a visual composition of light.
Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Shaker explained that the work embodies the festival’s theme and references the Quranic verse in Surah An-Nur, “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth.” He noted that the lamp and light represent the transition from darkness to guidance in Islam.
The installation features branches up to four meters long, inspired by the lotus plant, arranged into a semicircle. The word “Nour” (light) is carved into the leaf branches, creating a visual effect that emphasizes the presence of light and its spiritual significance.
Shaker expressed his delight at participating in the festival, emphasizing that the platform motivates artists to blend Islamic aesthetics with contemporary expression and provides Kuwaiti artists with a distinguished presence in regional creative forums.
Installation art, Shaker explained, combines various materials, textures, and elements to create two- or three-dimensional aesthetic experiences.
The Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival, which opened on November 19 under the theme “Siraj,” runs until January 30 and features over 150 artists from around the world, including researchers, specialists, and international creators. The festival hosts exhibitions, workshops, and events celebrating the aesthetics of Islamic art and its contemporary trends, positioning itself as a leading regional platform for artistic exchange and the promotion of Islamic art on the global stage.
