China Cultural Center in Kuwait hosts its first concert series dedicated entirely to Chinese folk and classical music. The two-day event, “Traditional Rhythm & New Vibe: Chamber Concert of Chinese Classical Music,” takes place on 24 and 25 November, organised with support from China Center of International Cultural Exchange and Tourism Promotion and China Conservatory of Music.
The programme brings together a group of distinguished musicians from China Conservatory of Music - Zhang Jian (dizi and xiao), Cheng Yuyu (pipa) , Ma Ke (erhu) , and Yang Xi (guzheng) . All four artists have a solid grounding in traditional Chinese music and extensive experience performing internationally.
The programme has been curated to demonstrate both the depth of China’s musical heritage and its ongoing evolution. Traditional pieces such as The Moon over the River on a Spring Night and Birdsong in Hollow Valley will sit alongside contemporary works, including Mist and Clouds over the Xiao and Xiang Rivers arranged by composer Gao Weijie and As slow as... by rising composer Xie Wenhui. The selection is intended to showcase the wide expressive range of instruments like erhu, guzheng, dizi and pipa, offering audiences a blend of familiar classics and modern reinterpretations.
In addition to the performances, the programme includes an educational component featuring illustrated introductions to traditional instruments. After each concert, attendees will have the opportunity to try basic playing techniques under the guidance of the musicians. Visitors with musical backgrounds may also join informal technical discussions or short improvisation sessions.
A highlight of the programme will be a collaborative performance featuring the Chinese musicians and a Kuwaiti band, presenting a joint arrangement of the well-known Chinese song Jasmine Flower. The cross-cultural collaboration aims to underscore the resonance between different musical traditions and to deepen cultural ties through shared performance.
