NEW YORK, Nov 15: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) group of states at the United Nations called for enhancing cooperation among governments, the technology sector, and civil society to ensure the digital space upholding human dignity and respecting religions and cultures. Second-Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations Fahad Al-Ajmi of Kuwait made this statement on behalf of the group during a meeting by the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly (Special Political and Decolonization) on information issues. He noted that the global information security and human rights are at a crossroads, emphasizing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ proposed framework for safeguarding content integrity against disinformation and hate speech.

Al-Ajmi underscored the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2686 (2023), which condemns violence and hate speech while promoting social cohesion. Al-Ajmi expressed concern over rising Islamophobia, religious intolerance, and racism in the media. He noted the critical role of UN Information Centres in raising awareness and supporting local communities. He also addressed the alarming increase in violence against journalists since Oct 7, 2023, particularly in conflict zones, stressing the necessity of protecting the right to information for civilian safety and accountability.

He urged accurate reporting and commended the UN Department of Global Communications for its efforts to counter misinformation. Additionally, he called for improved Arabic content and resources on UN digital platforms to better serve Arabic speakers. In conclusion, Al-Ajmi stated that combating disinformation and hate speech is essential to preserving peace and human dignity, and that a collective international commitment to uphold truth is necessary.(KUNA)
