KUWAIT CITY, Feb 16: Kuwait University, represented by the Sports Activities Department of the Deanship of Student Affairs, participated in the 2nd Gulf Sports Tournament for female students from universities and higher education institutions in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
According to a press release issued by Kuwait University, the tournament was hosted by Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar from February 6 to 11, 2026.
The KU delegation was headed by Dr. Salem Al-Shammari, the acting Dean of Student Affairs, and included 35 members, including administrators, coaches, and athletes. The university team competed in six sporting events - badminton, padel, 3x3 basketball, athletics, fencing, and table tennis. They achieved first place in three events.
In fencing, Yasmin Al-Shawaf, a student from the College of Engineering and Petroleum, won first place. Jana Al-Mukaimi from the College of Education secured second place.
In padel, Thamarah Al-Shallal from the College of Life Sciences and Rayan Al-Hajri from the College of Engineering and Petroleum both won second place.
Badriya Al-Antari from the College of Education earned second place in the shot put competition.
The university’s participation aimed to promote women’s sports activities and encourage positive athletic competition.
In a separate press statement, the President of Kuwait University, Professor Dr. Dina Musaed Al-Mailam, honored the university’s female students who participated in the tournament.
She praised the students’ outstanding performance during the tournament and expressed pride in them, highlighting that they elevated the university’s profile among 16 Gulf universities and higher education institutions.
Dr. Al-Mailam noted that the university's fourth-place finish in the overall rankings reflects the students’ determination, perseverance, and sense of belonging, adding that the university believes in the principle of a sound mind in a sound body, and that sports activities are an integral part of the university’s identity, contributing to the development of well-rounded leadership qualities.
Dr. Al-Mailam concluded by expressing her hope that the students will achieve more medals and higher rankings in future competitions.
