KUWAIT CITY, Aug 3: The Kuwait U-18 basketball team secured their spot in the Asian Cup Championship, set to be held in Jordan next September, following a decisive 78-40 victory over Oman. The match took place at the Federation Hall in Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Sports Complex for Indoor Halls as part of the final round of the Asian Youth Basketball Cup qualifiers for the Gulf region, which also saw Qatar defeat Bahrain 92-69.
Qatar topped the standings with eight points, followed by Kuwait in second place with seven points. Bahrain secured third place with six points, Saudi Arabia came fourth with five points, and Oman finished fifth with four points.
According to the qualifying system, the top two teams from the Gulf region qualifiers advance to the continental championship. With this well-deserved qualification, the team has demonstrated its potential for achieving future success.
After the qualifiers, Dhari Burjas, President of the Basketball Federation, along with Omani Mohammed Al-Hasani, Vice President of the Asian Coordination Committee for the Gulf Region, and Thamer Al-Shanfa, Secretary of the Kuwaiti Basketball Association and Treasurer of the Asian Coordination Committee for the Gulf Region, awarded the championship title to the Qatari team. Kuwait's national team was crowned second, and the Bahraini team took third place.
President of the Kuwait Basketball Association, Dhari Burjas, congratulated the national youth team on their qualification for the 2024 FIBA Asia Cup Finals. He dedicated this achievement to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, the wise government, and the generous Kuwaiti people.
He emphasized that this qualification is the result of significant effort, strategic planning, and collaborative efforts between the Association's Board of Directors, the clubs, the Public Authority for Sports, and the Kuwait Olympic Committee. Burjas noted that qualifying for the FIBA Asia Cup Finals marks a new era for Kuwaiti basketball, showcasing the remarkable development of the sport in recent years. He called for continued effort and attention to meet the upcoming challenges and to compete against advanced-level teams in future competitions.
