KUWAIT CITY, Feb 6: Kuwait fell by one place in the World Democracy Index 2022 that was issued recently by the Information Unit of the British Economist magazine, reports Al-Seyassah daily. Kuwait ranked 111th in the world out of 167 countries, fifth in the Middle East and fourth in the Arab world. It ranked first in the Gulf. In the Arab world, Tunisia ranked first and second in the Middle East, Morocco ranked second, Palestine ranked third, and Kuwait ranked fourth.

In the Gulf, Kuwait came first, followed by Qatar, then Oman, the Emirates, Bahrain, and then Saudi Arabia. Globally, Norway topped the index, followed by New Zealand, and then Ireland. Afghanistan was placed at the end of the ranking, followed by Myanmar. The report stated that the average score of the global index witnessed a stagnation in 2022. Despite expectations of a recovery after lifting restrictions related to the COVID- 19 pandemic, the score has not changed substantially, which canceled the positive effect of restoring individual freedoms. The scores of more than half of the countries measured by the index had experienced stagnation or decline. Western Europe was a positive case, as it was the only region whose scores returned to prepandemic levels.

Meanwhile, Transparency International’s President Delia Ferreira said, “More than a third of the world’s population still lives under authoritarian rule. Less than half of them live in a democracy. I believe there is a clear relationship between the decline of democracy and corruption.”
