KUWAIT CITY, Dec 6: Young Kuwaiti farmer Abdullah Mohammed Al-Mutairi, from Wafra Agricultural area in southern Kuwait, is reportedly the first to supply field-grown tomatoes in commercial quantities to the “Wafra” market in Sulaibiya, reports Al-Seyassah daily. His tomatoes, which were harvested from his fertile Al-Wafra farm, will be distributed to vegetable and fruit markets in all residential areas until the end of April. These tomatoes will also be available during Ramadan at affordable prices.

It is worth noting that field-grown tomatoes, cultivated in open fields under natural sunlight and fresh air, are considered superior to greenhouse tomatoes in both taste and nutritional value. Meanwhile, farmer Faisal Abdullah Al-Lafi explained that “laying down hanging tomato plants inside greenhouses and agricultural complexes is unsuitable for Kuwait’s agricultural environment. It is preferable to allow the tomato plants to grow upwards, and the top bud can be pruned before reaching the roof of the greenhouse or agricultural complex.” He sai thatd, based on several growing seasons on his farm in Al-Abdali, he observed that laying tomato plants along the soil surface limits fruit size and increases the risk of contamination. Allowing the plants to grow above the ground, however, produces larger fruits with better shape and color
