KUWAIT CITY, Oct 19: In a significant move to standardize street identification, Kuwait's Municipal Council on Sunday approved a proposal to replace the names of 591 streets with numerical designations. The decision was taken during an extraordinary session chaired by Council President Abdullah Al-Mehri, based on Ministerial Resolution No. 558 of 2023.
The Council also endorsed the minutes of the Committee for Studying Proposals and Requests concerning the naming of cities, suburbs, areas, streets, and squares. These minutes included the renaming of three streets after Arab capitals and the retention of 66 existing street names.
The approved proposal was submitted by the committee formed under the aforementioned ministerial resolution, which is responsible for reviewing and making recommendations on geographical naming across Kuwait.
The changes are aimed at improving navigational clarity and enhancing the organization of urban spaces, while still preserving select cultural and regional identifiers through the retention of certain street names and the addition of names reflecting Arab heritage.
