Kuwait to Kochi, smuggling gold inside LED bulbs

Kochi, Jan 13: Customs officials at Cochin International Airport confiscated 677.200 grams of gold from a passenger arriving from Kuwait on Thursday. The interception took place at the green channel by officers of D Batch, who acted based on profiling. The checked-in baggage of the passenger, arriving on Indigo flight 6E 1238, was scanned, revealing 24K gold coiled inside 8 LED bulbs and 4 LED lamps, totaling 498.50 grams. A personal search uncovered a 24K gold chain weighing 149.90 grams and two 22K gold jewelry pieces weighing 28.80 grams, concealed within the passenger’s underwear. In total, 677.200 grams of gold were recovered, with an estimated value of Rs 38.17 lakh, officials stated. Ongoing investigations are underway.

Meanwhile, A woman was apprehended at Kochi airport on January 11, carrying undeclared gold valued at Rs 36 lakh. Cochin Customs reported that the woman had discreetly concealed four gold rods within a tub of Nivea cream, which she had placed inside a shoe within her checked-in luggage.

Customs officials took action based on information provided by customs special intelligence, intercepting the woman upon her arrival from Rome, Italy. Despite attempting to use the green channel, designated for individuals without dutiable goods, the woman was intercepted.

According to the news agency ANI, “a suspicious image was detected during the scanning of her checked-in baggage.” Subsequent inspection revealed a tub of Nivea cream containing four gold rods, totaling 640 grams.
