DOHA, Dec 8: Kuwait goes into today’s crucial Arab Cup Group C match against the UAE at 5:30 p.m. at Stadium 974, aiming for victory. At the same time, Egypt will face Jordan at Lusail Stadium in a game that could determine which teams advance to the quarterfinals.
Jordan has already secured its place in the next round, topping the group with 6 points, while Egypt sits second with 2 points. The UAE has 1 point, with Kuwait just behind on goal difference. The battle for the second qualifying spot is wide open, with Egypt needing a win regardless of the Kuwait-UAE result, while Kuwait and the UAE must rely on Egypt drawing or losing to Jordan to have a chance at progression.
Kuwait started the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Egypt, despite dominating the match, before falling 1-3 to Jordan last Saturday. The defeat sparked criticism of Portuguese coach Hélio Sousa, who had replaced all 11 starters from the Egypt match.
In preparation for today’s game, the technical staff focused on correcting errors that led to the three goals against Jordan, improving team organization and positioning, particularly in the first half, where the opposition controlled much of the play.
Sousa acknowledges that a win alone may not guarantee advancement, but wants to showcase the progress the team has made under his leadership since September, as players gain confidence and display stronger performances.
Meanwhile, the UAE team shares the same objective. Coach Cosmin views today’s match as an opportunity to deliver a strong performance, secure quarterfinal qualification, and avenge their 2-1 defeat to Kuwait in the last Gulf Cup 20 hosted in Kuwait in December.
