Kuwait takes aim at nicotine push as cessation rate spikes

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 28: President of Kuwait Anti-Smoking and Cancer Society Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh underscored the importance of continuing national efforts to raise awareness about the harmful effects of smoking and nicotine products. Al-Saleh pointed out the increase in smoking cessation rates in Kuwait -- from seven percent in 2024 to nine percent at present. He said this proves the need for continuous support for those wishing to quit smoking. He warned against marketing tactics that utilize flavors, attractive packaging, social media, influencers and sports or music sponsorships.

He also stressed the need to raise awareness regarding the risks associated with nicotine products, particularly among youths and adolescents. His statement coincides with recent warnings issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding the rapid spread of nicotine pouches, especially among young people. WHO reported that the sales of these products exceeded 23 billion units in 2024—an increase of more than 50 percent compared to the previous year, while the global market value reached about $7 billion in 2025. The scientific data published by WHO this month showed the link between smoking and fertility issues. A systematic review of studies conducted between 2000 and 2026 indicated that female smokers face 40 percent higher risk of infertility compared to non-smokers, while a review covering 44 studies and more than 60,000 men established a connection between smoking and impairments in sperm quality and sexual function.
