Kuwait summons Iraqi envoy over attack on Basra consulate, delivers protest note

KUWAIT CITY, Apr 8: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by Acting Deputy Minister Ambassador Aziz Rahim Al-Deihani, on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, summoned the Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Iraq’s Embassy in Kuwait, Dr. Zaid Abbas Shanshul, to deliver a formal protest note following acts of storming and vandalism targeting the State of Kuwait’s General Consulate in Basra.

The Acting Deputy Minister stressed that the incident constitutes a flagrant violation of international norms and agreements, and a serious breach of Iraq’s international obligations, particularly the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

He further called on the Iraqi authorities to take urgent and decisive measures to identify and hold accountable all those involved in the attacks, and to ensure such incidents are not repeated.

Al-Deihani also emphasized the need to strengthen security and protection for all Kuwaiti diplomatic missions in Iraq, reaffirming that Kuwait will not hesitate to take all necessary steps to safeguard its interests and missions in accordance with international law.
