SHARJAH, Feb 7, (Agencies): Kuwait’s Ghezlan Hasan claimed the gold medal in the individual 10m air pistol competition, kicking off the shooting events at the 8th Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST 2026). Meanwhile, Bahrain captured the team gold.
Ghezlan secured first place after a thrilling final against Qatar’s Salma Almass, with the outcome decided on the final shot. She finished with a total score of 231.1 points, while Almass took silver with 228.3 points, and Bahrain’s Qamar Ali Ali earned the bronze with 207.5 points.
Head of the Kuwaiti delegation, Amina Al-Tamimi, praised the athletes’ achievements, noting that the results came despite stiff competition from top Arab shooters. She highlighted that the success reflects the robust support of Kuwait’s political leadership for sports in general and shooting in particular.
Al-Tamimi also acknowledged the efforts of the Kuwaiti Shooting Club President, Eng. Daaij Al-Otaibi and the club’s board of directors for providing the resources and environment that enabled this standout performance.
In the team competition, Bahrain topped the standings through Mooza Ali, Qamar Ali, and Badreya Alatawi, combining for 1662.30 points. The UAE finished second with Ghaya Alshuhail, Mahra Alsuwaidi, and Reem AlKetbi scoring 1637.25 points, while Kuwait placed third via Ghezlan Hasan, Shaha Alkhaddah, and Monerah Alfahad with 1635.20 points.
Shooting events will resume on Sunday with the 10m air rifle competition at the Al Dhaid Shooting Range, starting at 9:30 am.
The Arab Women’s Sports Tournament, running until 12 February, features 65 teams from 16 Arab countries competing across nine individual and team sports, showcasing the growing talent and competitiveness of women’s sports in the region.
Kuwait’s Al-Fatat Sports Club basketball team delivered an impressive performance, defeating the UAE’s Khorfakkan 85–66. The Kuwaiti side showcased excellent court vision and offensive efficiency, maintaining a steady lead throughout all four quarters to outpace their Emirati opponents.
In volleyball, Al-Fatat’s women’s team also achieved a convincing 3–0 victory over Syria’s Taldara Club, further demonstrating Kuwait’s growing prominence in women’s sports. The volleyball competitions at the Games bring together top Arab clubs, providing a competitive platform that reflects the advancement of women’s athletics in the region.
This victory highlights both the competitive spirit and technical progress of women’s basketball in the region. The tournament, running until February 12, features a large Kuwaiti delegation of 69 athletes competing across multiple disciplines. Al-Fatat’s win strengthens their position in the group stages as they aim for a podium finish in this year’s edition.
