KUWAIT CITY, Sept 8: Kuwait is witnessing transformation in its development landscape due to the growing foreign direct investment (FDI), which has become the lifeblood of urban development and pillar of the comprehensive economic modernization strategy.
This growth reflects the ambitious vision of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to guarantee a sustainable future that reduces dependence on traditional oil revenues and establishes a robust national production base built on effective partnership with the global private sector. This will reshape the investment landscape in the country, positioning it as a safe, stable and viable destination for international investors in the long term. The newspaper obtained a copy of the latest annual report issued by Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA), which revealed a significant leap in the attractiveness of the local investment environment. The construction and infrastructure sector attracted foreign capital of about KD283.2 million. With this substantial financial achievement, the sector ranked third among the most dynamic and attractive economic sectors for foreign investors, achieving a market share of 14.36 percent of total investments fl owing into the country.
These indicators confirm the success of the legislative and regulatory policies adopted by the country to help the business environment and attract major international companies, thereby, adding value that goes beyond cash fl ow and building a knowledge- based economy through international expertise. In a related development, economic reports and analyses issued by international and local financial institutions confirm that expansion in the infrastructure sector is the cornerstone for achieving a qualitative leap in the Kuwaiti national economy and reshaping its position on the global competitiveness map.
This developmental approach is not limited to improving the daily lives of citizens and expatriates, as it extends to being the main driver for attracting foreign direct investment. From this perspective, the importance of foreign investment in the construction and infrastructure sector cannot be confined to providing liquidity or financial financing. It includes the transfer and localization of advanced engineering technologies and the importation of modern management methods used in the implementation of mega-projects worldwide.
The reports explained that major international companies contribute to raising the efficiency of on-site implementation and reducing the timeframes for completing vital state projects, while ensuring adherence to the highest international quality standards and environmental sustainability principles, which have become essential for modern projects. The reports indicated that the presence of international companies in the Kuwaiti market creates a positive and healthy competitive environment that motivates national companies and local contractors to develop their tools and modernize their administrative and technical systems to keep pace with global standards. The reports also emphasized that the greatest benefit for the macroeconomy is cooperation between the local and international construction sectors to build a solid foundation of national expertise and human resources.
This expertise will enable individuals to acquire unique and high-quality technical skills through interaction with experts and engineers from global companies, paving the way for a new generation of Kuwaiti talent capable of leading future development projects with competence. This is true given that the construction sector is the primary engine driving many related economic sectors, such as building materials manufacturing, logistics, transportation, insurance and banking.
Therefore, the strong entry of foreign investors into the construction sector not only refl ects a successful economic reality, but also charts a future course that confirms Kuwait’s confident progress towards consolidating its position as a leading and attractive financial and commercial center in the region. The international investment in the local construction sector is considered a fertile and ideal environment for expanding foreign capital in the country.
