KUWAIT CITY, Feb 10: Sri Lankan Ambassador to Kuwait Lakshitha Ratnayake expressed his appreciation for the strength and solidity of the relationship between Sri Lanka and Kuwait. Ratnayake made the statement at the celebration of the 78th Independence Day of his country. Minister of State for Municipal and Housing Abdullatif Al-Mashari, several officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other government institutions attended the event. According to the Ambassador, Sri Lanka values the strong and enduring relations it shares with the State of Kuwait.

He considers the presence of Al- Mashari “an evidence of the friendship, cooperation and goodwill that bind Sri Lanka and the State of Kuwait.” He conveyed the greetings of his country’s president, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and the Sri Lankan government to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al- Sabah on the occasion of the National Day and Liberation Day. He added “Sri Lanka’s relations with the State of Kuwait in the field of overseas employment are witnessing remarkable improvement day by day.”

He revealed that Sri Lanka is currently the fifth largest expatriate community in Kuwait, and these strong people-to-people ties have opened broad horizons for further cooperation. He went on to say that “the friendly and cooperative relations with the Kuwait Fund extend for nearly half a century,” affirming that the Fund has been financing numerous development projects in Sri Lanka, including infrastructure, government facilities and academic institutions.

He said his country is known as one of the best tourist destinations and was named the ‘Most Beautiful Island in the World’ for 2025 by Big 7 Travel, adding that “in 2024 and 2025, Sri Lanka attracted millions of tourists from around the world. We expect an increase in the number of Kuwaiti tourists this year, as three airlines – Sri Lankan Airlines, Jazeera Airways and Kuwait Airways— are operating direct and regular flights from Kuwait to Sri Lanka.”
