Kuwait Red Crescent Society pledges $500,000 to aid Afghan relief efforts

DOHA, Qatar. April 29: In a bid to alleviate the dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, the Kuwait Red Crescent Society announced a generous donation of half a million dollars to support its Afghan counterpart. The donation was formalized through agreements reached during a meeting held in Doha, Qatar.

Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS), Anwar Al-Hassawi, revealed the donation in a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) following his participation in a consultative meeting convened by the Qatar Red Crescent Society. The meeting brought together partners from the Afghan Red Crescent and various international humanitarian organizations, including the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Al-Hassawi emphasized the significance of such gatherings, highlighting Kuwait’s longstanding commitment to providing humanitarian aid to countries in need, a tradition dating back to the founding of the Kuwait Red Crescent Society in 1966. He underscored the urgent need to assist Afghanistan, citing the nation’s profound humanitarian challenges in the health, relief, and education sectors.

During the meeting, Al-Hassawi held discussions with the head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, Mawlawi Muti’ al-Haq, where they underscored the pressing need for assistance in light of Afghanistan’s complex humanitarian crisis. Alarming statistics revealed during the discussions included over 13,000 children suffering from heart defects and more than three million widows resulting from Afghanistan’s prolonged conflicts. Additionally, the influx of Afghan refugees from neighboring Iran and Pakistan, estimated at over six million people, further exacerbates the humanitarian plight.

The meeting, held in cooperation with various humanitarian entities, aimed to address the evolving humanitarian situation in Afghanistan and strategize on the most effective means of delivering aid to those in need.

Through this donation and collaborative efforts, the Kuwait Red Crescent Society reaffirms its commitment to providing vital support to vulnerable populations and contributing to global humanitarian efforts.
