NEW YORK, Nov 20 (KUNA): Kuwait has reaffirmed its full support for United Nations efforts to promote sport as a tool for development and peace, highlighting its endorsement of the “Olympic Truce” as a symbol of human dignity and equality.
The statement was delivered by Kuwaiti Diplomatic Attaché Sarah Al-Hassawi on Wednesday during a plenary session of the UN General Assembly, discussing the agenda item: “Sport for Development and Peace: Building a Peaceful and Better World through Sport and the Olympic Ideal.”
Al-Hassawi emphasised that sport remains a powerful force for uniting humanity, promoting values of justice, cooperation, and mutual respect. She highlighted Kuwait’s National Sports Strategy (2022–2028), launched by the Public Authority for Sports in partnership with the UN Development Programme, and aimed at strengthening sports institutions, empowering youth, and ensuring equal access to sports in line with Kuwait Vision 2035.
She also noted the expansion of school sports programs and community initiatives that integrate physical activity with volunteerism and environmental awareness. On women’s empowerment, Al-Hassawi highlighted Kuwait’s efforts to increase female participation through the Kuwait Women’s Sports Committee, greater representation in sports federations, and specialized training programs. She praised Kuwaiti female athletes for their honorable performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Al-Hassawi further commended the UN’s “Football for Humanity” initiative supporting Palestinian children and youth, noting that Kuwait recently hosted its first edition under the patronage of Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya in cooperation with the UN.
She concluded by affirming Kuwait’s belief that investing in youth and sport is essential for fostering peace and prosperity worldwide.
