KUWAIT CITY, April 17: His Highness Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah chaired Kuwait’s delegation at a high-level international meeting on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, underscoring the country’s firm stance on safeguarding maritime security amid rising regional tensions.

The virtual meeting, co-chaired by Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer, brought together senior representatives from allied and friendly nations to assess the implications of the current situation in one of the world’s most critical oil and trade corridors.

Kuwait’s Foreign Minister, Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who co-led the delegation, praised international efforts led by France and the United Kingdom to ensure safe and secure maritime navigation. He highlighted the importance of maintaining stability in the Strait, noting its vital role in supporting global supply chains, as well as energy and food security.

Reaffirming Kuwait’s longstanding position, Sheikh Jarrah stressed that the Strait of Hormuz remains an international waterway governed by established principles of international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which guarantees the right of transit passage. He firmly rejected any unilateral actions or attempts to impose new realities that violate these legal frameworks.

The minister also called for intensified diplomatic engagement alongside efforts to ensure maritime safety, urging full compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 2817 and adherence to international law by all parties, including Iran.

The meeting comes amid heightened concerns over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route through which a significant share of the world’s oil and trade passes.
