GENEVA, Oct 2: The State of Kuwait on Wednesday reaffirmed its deep-rooted national commitment to the principle of equality before the law, describing it as a cornerstone of justice and a fundamental pillar in its protection of human rights, as enshrined in the Kuwaiti Constitution.
Delivering Kuwait’s statement during an interactive dialogue with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Independent International Experts Mechanism for the Promotion of Racial Justice, Equality, and Law Enforcement, Diplomatic Attaché Heba Al-Sabah emphasized that just and transparent law enforcement is key to national stability and fostering public trust in state institutions.
The dialogue took place as part of the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council, currently being held in Geneva.
Al-Sabah outlined Kuwait’s ongoing legal reforms aimed at aligning national legislation with international human rights standards. She highlighted key initiatives, including the abolition of certain penal provisions, raising the legal marriage age to 18, enacting laws to protect families from domestic violence, and strengthening anti-corruption measures to preserve public funds and reinforce the principles of justice and equality.
She underscored Kuwait’s efforts to continuously review and update its judicial and legislative systems, with hundreds of laws already under examination or amendment to ensure compliance with global norms.
Al-Sabah also noted that equality in law enforcement must be a universal principle governing international relations. She warned against the dangers of selectivity and double standards, emphasizing the need to uphold state sovereignty and guarantee the rights of all peoples.
Reiterating Kuwait’s commitment to international cooperation, Al-Sabah said the country stands ready to work with global partners in promoting the rule of law, peace, security, and sustainable development for all nations.
