Kuwait qualifies for AFC U-23 Cup finals after a thrilling draw

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 12: Kuwait’s Olympic football team secured a spot in the AFC U-23 Cup finals, which will be held in Qatar between April and May 2024, after drawing 2-2 with Iraq in the final match of Group 6 qualifiers, at Jaber International Stadium, today. Kuwait and Iraq finished with 7 points each at the top of the group, but Iraq had a better goal difference.

Kuwait qualified as one of the best four runners-up in the qualifiers. Kuwait scored two goals through Salman Al-Awadi from a free kick (48) and Bandar Al-Salama from a stunning long shot (65), but Iraq equalized quickly with goals from Zulfiqar Younis (69) and Mustafa Saadoun (70). Kuwait missed a chance to win the match when Abdulaziz Naji’s penalty kick was saved by Iraq’s goalkeeper Kamil Al-Rikabi (75). In the same group, East Timor beat Macau 5-0, earning their first 3 points while Macau ended with zero points.
