Kuwait Pushes Legal and Digital Reforms to Safeguard Expat Workers

KUWAIT CITY, June 25: Kuwait has renewed its unwavering commitment to promoting workers’ rights and providing a fair work environment, in line with its development vision and sustainable development goals. This came during a meeting hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, represented by the Human Rights Affairs Department, which included representatives from the Public Authority for Manpower, the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the General Federation of Kuwait Trade Union.

The meeting followed up on the outcomes of the 113th session of the International Labor Conference, which was hosted in Geneva (June 2-13) with the participation of delegations from 187 countries, including representatives of government, employers, and workers. This meeting aims to enhance ongoing cooperation between relevant authorities to improve Kuwait’s human rights measures, as the General Federation of Kuwait Trade Unions was greatly thanked for their ongoing professional and educational training.

The latest developments for the digital platform for labor recruitment were covered, with the aim to preventing future human trafficking cases, ensuring a systematic process, and activating the role of diplomacy. In addition, leveraging the technological revolution to streamline the process was also explored, which involves data logging to electronic contracts, in line with His Highness the Amir’s directives to digitize Kuwait’s services.

In this regard, Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim AL-Duaij AL-Sabah stressed in her statement to KUNA the “need to raise and improve the performance of first responders (law enforcement, and agencies specialized in human trafficking cases).” She also stressed the need to organize training courses and workshops for new employees at the two migrant worker shelters, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration, to train them on implementing Law No. 91 of 2013 on combating Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants. After the meeting, participating parties expressed their readiness to cooperate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by the Human Rights Department, in order to advance workers’ rights, while also reviewing their plans and strategies for presentation at the upcoming 114th international conference.(KUNA)
