Fishing for mullet ‘meide’ resumes in Kuwait Bay after 22 years ban
PAAAFR approves trial fishing for mullet fish in Kuwait Bay.

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 4: Fishing for mullet fish, known locally as “meide”, has officially resumed in Kuwait Bay after a 22-year suspension, following approvals from relevant government bodies. The move is expected to boost the availability of this popular species in local markets at affordable prices.

Last week, Director General of Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) Eng. Salem Al-Hai issued an exceptional decision allowing the fishing of “meide” in Kuwait Bay, based on directives from the Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem. The decision specifies that fishing will occur in designated locations on a trial basis and will be closely monitored and supervised by PAAAFR. In this regard, Chairman of the Kuwait Fishermen’s Union, Abdullah Al- Sarheed, announced that the decision to resume fishing for mullet fish “meide” in Kuwait Bay after a 22-year suspension came with the approval of the Environment Public Authority (EPA), PAAAFR, and the General Directorate of Coast Guard.

He revealed that fishing operations are permitted until November 30 and will be carried out under strict regulations to ensure the sustainability of marine life and the protection of marine reserves. Both officials affirmed that the reintroduction of “meide” fishing aims to restore balance to the fish market, stabilize prices, and contribute to food security, all while adhering to environmental and regulatory standards
