Kuwait minister proposes sign language sermons in one mosque per governorate
Kuwait aims for inclusive worship with sign language sermons in each governorate.

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 22: In a significant move toward greater inclusion, Minister of Social Affairs and Minister of Family and Childhood Affairs Dr. Amthal Al-Huwailah announced on Wednesday the submission of a formal proposal to Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohammad Al-Wasmi, calling for the allocation of at least one mosque in each governorate to broadcast Friday sermons and religious events in sign language.

Dr. Al-Huwailah told KUNA that the proposal reflects Kuwait’s commitment to implementing the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and upholding the principles of justice and equality in delivering religious services to all members of society, including the deaf community.

“This step will enhance both religious and social awareness and broaden the scope of beneficiaries of Friday sermons and religious gatherings,” she stated, emphasizing that the initiative falls within a broader framework of strengthening cooperation and integration between government agencies to achieve shared social goals.

She further noted that the proposal aligns with national efforts to empower persons with disabilities and ensure their full participation in public life. The Public Authority for the Disabled is currently working to coordinate with the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs to organize a joint meeting aimed at discussing the organizational and technical aspects of the project. The objective is to define a suitable implementation mechanism that ensures the sustainability and long-term success of this initiative.

Dr. Al-Huwailah also expressed her appreciation for the Ministry of Islamic Affairs’ ongoing efforts in serving the houses of worship and promoting noble religious values. She voiced her hope that this collaboration would become a leading example of religious and social inclusion across the State of Kuwait.
