Qarwa Island

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 14: The Kuwaiti diving team has confirmed the positive condition of Qarwa Island, often referred to as the "Kuwait Maldives." Contrary to concerns about its potential disappearance in the coming years, the team asserts that the island, predominantly sandy, remains stable with no signs of shrinking.

Walid Al-Fadil, the team leader, explained to Al-Rai, "The movement of waves exhibits variation annually. Sand deposits occur in the north, east, and west sides when currents move southward. The island, being relatively small, is susceptible to these changes, allowing for its dynamic formation." Al-Fadil expressed hope for maintaining this equilibrium, emphasizing the potential hazards posed by ships anchoring along the shores, particularly concerning the safety of turtles.

The team has undertaken significant efforts to preserve the island's ecological integrity, removing substantial amounts of waste, including discarded fishing nets, from its vicinity. With over 26 marine docks implemented to facilitate ship and boat docking while safeguarding the diverse coral reefs, the team collaborates with the Australian University of Queensland to monitor and assess the health of these reefs. Al-Fadil noted a positive trend, with the reefs showing signs of recovery after a significant die-off in previous years.

Highlighting the importance of vigilant monitoring, Al-Fadil stressed the need for observers to prevent any potential threats to the island. He believes that such efforts alone will contribute to the well-being of the island, ensuring its continued expansion.

Qarwa Island, recognized by Western media as "Kuwait's Maldives," holds significance as the smallest island in Kuwait and the first Kuwaiti land to be liberated following the Iraqi invasion. Its name stems from the presence of oil deposits, including bitumen.
