KUWAIT CITY, Oct 26: Minister of Public Works Dr Noura Al-Mashaan on Monday laid the foundation stone for the North Kabd Wastewater Treatment Plant project, which will have an initial operational capacity of 500,000 cubic metres per day and the potential to expand to one million cubic metres daily.

The ceremony was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait Yang Xin, senior officials from the Ministry of Public Works and representatives of the Chinese company implementing the project.

In her address, Al-Mashaan said the project was being implemented in line with the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who have placed significant emphasis on infrastructure development and sustainable growth.

She said the project reflects the strong friendship and cooperation between Kuwait and China and represents one of the major strategic initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Public Works to modernize the country's wastewater infrastructure, support development plans and strengthen environmental sustainability.

The project covers an estimated area of 2.8 million square metres and includes a comprehensive network of treatment facilities, pumping stations, pipelines, storage reservoirs and supporting infrastructure.

The North Kabd plant will initially treat 500,000 cubic metres of wastewater daily, with provision for future expansion to a designed capacity of one million cubic metres per day, enabling the facility to meet growing demand in the years ahead.

The project also includes the construction of pumping stations in Shaddadiya, Jahra and Mishref, along with pipeline networks and tunnel-boring systems with diameters of up to three metres. According to the minister, these large-diameter tunnelling networks are the first of their kind in Kuwait and will be used to transport wastewater and treated water.

Storage reservoirs with a combined capacity of 600,000 cubic metres will also be constructed as part of the project.

Another major component is a central incineration facility to dispose of waste generated during the wastewater treatment process. The project will also incorporate a renewable energy system using solar power and biogas, with the aim of meeting 50 percent of the project's energy requirements through these sources.

Al-Mashaan stressed that the project would significantly improve Kuwait's wastewater infrastructure and increase the use of treated water for irrigation and landscaping. Reusing treated wastewater is expected to help conserve water resources, protect the environment and combat desertification.

She said the project represents an important step towards establishing modern and sustainable infrastructure capable of meeting Kuwait's present and future needs. It also reflects the ministry's commitment to implementing vital development projects that support the country's long-term sustainability objectives.

The minister expressed her appreciation to the Amir, the Crown Prince and the Prime Minister for their continued support for development projects, praying for the continued safety and prosperity of Kuwait, its leadership and its people.
