KUWAIT CITY, Sep 18: The fake Kuwait police officers are still calling — apparently convinced that somewhere in Kuwait there is one person who has not yet heard the warning.
For years, residents have been warned about scammers who appear on WhatsApp video calls wearing what looks like a police uniform, introduce themselves as Kuwait police officers and then begin asking for Civil ID details, photographs, bank information or other personal data.
The problem for the scammers is that almost everyone now knows the trick.
Yet they keep calling.
It is almost as if the scammers have adopted a simple business strategy: Keep calling until somebody answers.
The script has become familiar. A video call arrives. A man appears on screen wearing a police-style uniform, with spelling mistakes. He looks serious. He introduces himself as an officer and starts asking questions.
The person on the other end, meanwhile, is probably thinking: Here we go again.
Kuwait authorities have repeatedly warned that genuine police officers do not conduct investigations or demand sensitive personal and banking information through random WhatsApp video calls.
Despite the warnings, the scammers continue their operations, apparently hoping to find that one unsuspecting victim who will panic, believe the uniform and start handing over information.
The scam has become so well known that some residents may now be more surprised to receive a genuine video call from a friend than from a “police officer.”
The scammers may change names, uniforms, profile photographs and stories, but the objective remains the same — create fear, establish authority and convince the victim to surrender valuable personal information.
The message remains simple: A uniform on a video call does not make someone a police officer.
If someone claiming to be from the police or another government authority contacts you unexpectedly through WhatsApp and demands sensitive information, end the call and verify the matter directly through official channels.
As for the scammers, they apparently have plenty of patience.
They know that almost everybody knows they are fake.
They are simply hoping that one person doesn't.
