KUWAIT KEEN TO HELP SOLVE REGIONAL ISSUES – Push on for non-permanent SC seat

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 25, (KUNA): Senior Kuwaiti officials have met with UN member countries’ ministers to rally further support for the state’s candidacy to the UN Security Council (UNSC) non-permanent seat, in elections due next June. Representative of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to the UN General Assembly’s (UNGA) 71st session, and First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah held a series of meetings to drum up backing for the 2018-19 UNSC membership.

His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, the Amir’s Representative, held a reception following his Sept 21 speech and invited heads of delegates taking part in the UNGA to discuss a host of issues including the candidacy. “We consider this a launch for Kuwait’s campaign for its candidacy to the international Security Council for the years 2018-19,” Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled said in a statement to KUNA and Kuwait TV late Saturday.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled separately held over 30 meetings with senior government offi cials from different UN member countries. “In our meetings, we exchanged views over a host of issues and Kuwait’s candidacy,” he said.

His Highness the Prime Minister, in his speech before UNGA, emphasized Kuwait’s commitment to principles of UN Charter during its membership in Security Council. “As I emphasize my country’s commitment to the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter, being a small peace-loving country, that bases its relations with others on the principles of respecting the sovereignty, independence, good neighborly relations and non-interference in their internal affairs,” he said.

His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al- Mubarak said Kuwait would contribute to finding solutions by consensus to the various global challenges, for the maintenance of international peace and security by peaceful ways and means. His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al- Mubarak thanked all members states of the Asia-Pacific Group in New York, for their endorsement of Kuwait’s candidature to the UNSC seat, and said he was looking forward for support of all UN members during next June elections. Kuwait last UNSC non-permanent seat was in 1978-79. Meanwhile, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah has affirmed Kuwait’s active international involvement aimed at solving regional and global conflicts, which have political and security ramifications on Gulf States’ stability.

Kuwait, through its participation in international conferences, is exerting efforts to seek solutions to regional and international issues, especially regional conflicts which have impact on security of the Gulf countries. Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, said the delegation of Kuwait to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) 1st session had made active contributions, foremost by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who participated in a leaders summit on refugees on Sept 20. He said His Highness the Amir reiterated Kuwaits continued support to the global humanitarian efforts with the ultimate objective of alleviating suffering of people suffering from conflicts around the world. “The speech of His Highness the Amir reaffirms the role of Kuwait to help refugees and displaced, and shows how it is important that the international community exert efforts to end the conflicts permanently,” said Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled.

His Highness the Amir also highlighted Kuwaits financial contributions to the refugees and internally displaced people in different parts of the conflict, including in Syria. His Highness the Amir also met with US Secretary of State John Kerry and discussed regional and international issues of mutual interest. Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled said the representative of His Highness the Amir, His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, underlined Kuwaits unshaken cooperation with the UN, the latest was the approval of the sustainable development goals and the Paris climate change agreement. Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and the latter commended Kuwaits leading role at the regional and international levels. Ban said this role helped millions of people suffering from conflicts or disasters globally
