KUWAIT CITY, Jan 22: The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) hosted a workshop titled “The Road to Decarbonization: Developing a Carbon Policy Mechanism for Kuwait” on Tuesday, bringing together Kuwaiti and Japanese experts to discuss the country’s carbon policy framework.
The event, held in collaboration with the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) and Japanese companies including Mitsubishi, aimed to launch a national dialogue on carbon policies aligned with Kuwait’s economic and institutional context, KFAS said in a statement Thursday.
The workshop featured leading researchers from Japan, representatives from the Japanese Embassy, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), the Environment Public Authority (EPA), the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Discussions focused on Kuwait’s progress towards Kuwait Vision 2035, enhancing the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and achieving net-zero carbon neutrality. KFAS highlighted the need to move from general commitments to practical policy tools that support the country’s low-carbon transition.
The workshop marks the first step in a multi-stage process to build stakeholder consensus, enhance national readiness, and support the transition to concrete policies. KFAS said it will prepare a white paper outlining deliverables and a phased roadmap for a national carbon policy mechanism.
KFAS noted that the initiative is part of its support for the Energy Transition Document launched in 2025, contributing to environmental sustainability goals and preparing the country for the energy sector’s transition.
