Kuwait Hands Bangladeshi Life Term, Kuwaiti Citizen 10 Years in Drug Cases

KUWAIT CITY, August 24: Several circuits of Kuwait’s Criminal Court have issued stringent sentences against individuals convicted of drug trafficking, possession and use of narcotic and psychotropic substances, following investigations and arrests carried out by anti-narcotics officers across the country.

Under amendments to Kuwait’s Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Control Law, the court handed down multiple prison terms and financial penalties in cases involving the trafficking and use of drugs.

Among the rulings, a Bangladeshi national was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined KD50,000 for trafficking and using psychotropic substances.

In another case, an accused was sentenced to 15 years in prison without the possibility of pardon and fined KD50,000 for trafficking and using psychotropic substances.

A separate defendant received 15 years’ imprisonment without pardon after being convicted of trafficking and using psychotropic substances, possessing a pistol and two bullets without a licence, and resisting security personnel following his arrest at Jahra Soukh.

The court also sentenced a Kuwaiti citizen to 10 years in prison and fined KD50,000 for trafficking in hashish and psychotropic substances.

The rulings followed investigations conducted by the General Department for Narcotics Control, which led to the arrest of the accused in several areas of Kuwait.

The sentences reflect the tougher penalties being enforced under recent amendments to Kuwait’s legislation governing narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, as authorities continue their crackdown on drug trafficking and related offences.
