WASHINGTON, Oct 30: The State of Kuwait commended the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for its vital role in supporting Iraq’s political stability, enhancing security, and promoting development.
Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Abdulaziz Al-Saeedi, Third Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Kuwait to the United Nations, expressed appreciation for the mission, whose mandate is set to conclude on December 31, 2025. He highlighted UNAMI’s positive support on files concerning Kuwaiti prisoners of war and missing persons, nationals of third countries, and Kuwaiti property, including the national archives.
Al-Saeedi emphasized the importance of Iraq’s full cooperation with the UN High-Level Representative tasked exclusively with following up on these files, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2792 (2025), to ensure progress on these sensitive humanitarian issues constructively and responsibly, free from political exploitation.
He stressed that Kuwait sees Iraq’s security and stability as essential elements of regional security and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to close cooperation with the UN and Iraq to address these humanitarian matters within a consistent UN framework. Such an approach, he said, upholds international law, strengthens good neighborly relations, and enables Iraq to fulfill its international obligations and duties.
Al-Saeedi further called for the orderly conclusion of UNAMI’s mandate, noting the importance of preserving the gains achieved during the mission’s tenure. He underlined that the transition should be carried out in close coordination with the UN Secretariat and relevant mechanisms to ensure uninterrupted follow-up of outstanding Kuwaiti humanitarian and national issues.
Kuwait reiterated its appreciation to the United Nations for UNAMI’s ongoing efforts since its establishment and expressed hope that the transition process will sustain the mission’s positive impact on Iraq’s political, security, and development landscape.
