KUWAIT CITY, June 14: Kuwait’s General Department of Criminal Investigation, through its Land Border Investigations Department, has foiled an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of cigarettes out of the country via the Nuwaiseeb border crossing, authorities said.

Security officials arrested a Gulf national involved in the smuggling attempt as part of ongoing efforts to combat cross-border illegal activities and strengthen control at land entry and exit points.

According to the details of the case, the suspect attempted to leave the country when officers inspected the vehicle he was driving. A search revealed 210 cartons of cigarettes hidden within the structural frame of the vehicle in an apparent attempt to evade detection.

Investigations further showed that the suspect had initially fled a customs checkpoint earlier in the day before later surrendering himself at the Nuwaiseeb border crossing in the evening.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to purchasing the cigarettes in advance from two individuals, one Indian and one Syrian. He stated that the goods were collected from an open space area in the Wafra area before being concealed inside the vehicle for smuggling and resale for illegal profit.

Authorities said the suspect, along with the seized goods and vehicle, has been referred for legal action. The vehicle used in the operation was confiscated and sealed in accordance with established procedures.

The Ministry of Interior reaffirmed its commitment to combating smuggling and illegal cross-border activities, stressing that strict legal measures will continue to be taken against violators of the law.
