KUWAIT CITY, Aug 3: Kuwait is currently experiencing moderate to brisk northwesterly winds that are expected to continue through Monday, leading to widespread dust storms and significantly reduced visibility, according to the Meteorology Department.
Dharar Al-Ali, Director of the Meteorology Department, stated on Sunday that wind speeds may exceed 50 kilometers per hour in several areas, particularly exposed regions, where horizontal visibility could drop to below 1,000 meters.
Al-Ali explained that the current weather pattern is being driven by an extension of the Indian monsoon depression. This system is bringing with it a very hot and dry air mass, contributing to both elevated temperatures and rough sea conditions. He noted that sea waves may rise to more than six feet at times due to the intensified northwesterly winds.
The meteorological forecast suggests a gradual easing of wind speeds starting Tuesday. Conditions are expected to improve by Tuesday evening, as winds shift to a southeasterly direction along coastal areas. This change is likely to bring increased relative humidity, particularly in coastal regions.
Winds will persist intermittently through Wednesday, Thursday, and into Friday, albeit with decreasing intensity.
Daytime temperatures are forecast to remain extremely high, ranging between 47°C and 50°C, while nighttime temperatures are expected to fall between 35°C and 37°C. Dust levels are anticipated to gradually subside during the evenings as weather conditions stabilize.
The Meteorology Department advises the public to take necessary precautions during this period, especially motorists and individuals with respiratory conditions. Maritime activities should also be approached with caution due to rough sea conditions.
