KUWAIT CITY, Oct 13: Kuwait has been elected to membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027-2029 term, following elections held by the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the election reflects the international community’s confidence in Kuwait and its appreciation of the country’s role and contributions at regional and international levels.
The ministry expressed sincere thanks and appreciation to brotherly and friendly countries that supported Kuwait’s candidacy, saying the confidence placed in the country would encourage it to continue contributing to multilateral international efforts.
It said Kuwait’s election reflects its established approach of respecting the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, promoting human rights and addressing related issues constructively, without selectivity, politicization or double standards.
The ministry also reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to fulfilling the pledges it made during its candidacy and continuing coordination with member states and relevant UN mechanisms to support international efforts to advance human rights.
Kuwait’s new term will extend its participation in the council beyond its current 2024-2026 membership, providing an opportunity to continue what the ministry described as an active and balanced role in strengthening the council’s work.
The ministry said Kuwait would continue to promote dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect as key principles in addressing human rights issues at the international level.
