KUWAIT CITY, Oct 19: The Court of Appeal, presided over by Counselor Abdullah Al-Othman, has sentenced the president of a sports federation to three years and four months in prison and the federation’s travel manager to two years and four months in a case involving the embezzlement of public funds through fictitious sports camps, forgery and money laundering.
The court also ordered a fine and the confiscation of KD 551,000 in connection with the case, while upholding the acquittal of a former president of the federation.
The case involved allegations of submitting fictitious invoices for expenses related to camps purportedly organised in Italy, as well as manipulating the number of players participating in tournaments and training camps in the UAE, Egypt and South Korea.
Investigations indicated that the alleged scheme involved falsifying expenditure records for camps that did not take place as claimed and misrepresenting player participation figures to support the financial claims.
The ruling marks the Court of Appeal’s decision in the case involving alleged financial irregularities, forged documents and money laundering linked to the federation’s sports activities.
