KUWAIT CITY, March 29: Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on Sunday delivered a forceful condemnation of what he described as “brutal Iranian aggression” against Kuwait and other countries in the region, warning that the escalating attacks represent a serious threat to regional and international security.

Speaking during the 165th regular session of the League of Arab States Council at the ministerial level, held virtually, Sheikh Jarrah said the ongoing attacks—launched directly from Iranian territory—constitute a blatant violation of Kuwait’s sovereignty, as well as breaches of international law, international humanitarian law, and the United Nations Charter.

He noted that the aggression has resulted in casualties, including martyrs and injuries, while also placing citizens and residents at risk and causing damage to vital civilian infrastructure. The minister further highlighted the widening scope of the attacks, pointing to missile and drone strikes carried out by Iran-aligned militias in Iraq targeting Kuwait and other Arab states.

Sheikh Jarrah welcomed assurances from the Government of Iraq to take action against these armed factions, expressing hope that Baghdad’s efforts would succeed in curbing such hostile activities in the near future.

Addressing internal security concerns, the minister revealed that Kuwaiti authorities had successfully dismantled three terrorist cells linked to Hezbollah, thwarting planned acts of sabotage. He described these developments as part of broader attempts to destabilize several Arab countries and spread fear among populations.

He stressed that Iran’s actions reflect a systematic strategy of regional destabilization, using “chaos and terrorism as tools of influence,” and warned that the situation is not a temporary escalation but an ongoing pattern requiring firm international deterrence measures to safeguard global peace and security.

Reaffirming Kuwait’s position, Sheikh Jarrah underscored the country’s inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, stating that Kuwait will take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, territory, and population in accordance with international law.

The foreign minister also called for urgent reforms within the League of Arab States, acknowledging limitations in its ability to respond effectively to fast-evolving regional challenges. He urged a comprehensive restructuring to enhance decision-making efficiency and strengthen implementation mechanisms.

He added that despite these shortcomings, countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council have consistently supported Arab and Islamic causes, emphasizing the need to modernize Arab institutional frameworks to translate this support into tangible outcomes.

Concluding his remarks, Sheikh Jarrah stressed the importance of including regional countries in any future negotiations with Iran, particularly those directly affected by its policies, to ensure a more inclusive approach to achieving lasting regional security and stability. (KUNA)
