Kuwait Club sticker attempts to a goal against Al Salmiya.

KUWAIT CITY, May 18: Kuwait Club needs only two points from the last two rounds to secure the Zain Premier League title for the 19th time in its history, and the third consecutive time. If it wins the title this season, it will be just two championships behind Al-Qadisiya and Al-Arabi.

“Al-Abyad” overcame a significant hurdle by defeating Al-Salmiya 3-0 at Thamer Stadium in the eighth round of the championship group competitions. This victory raised its tally to 63 points, putting it  5 points ahead of its closest c rival, Al-Arabi, who dropped two crucial points after drawing 1-1 with Al-Qadisiya in the same round.

Kuwait Club President Khaled Al-Ghanem stated, “The league title is still up for grabs,” adding, “The five-point lead does not guarantee that Kuwait has won the title.”

Al-Salmiya played with most of its key players in preparation for the Amir Cup final against Al-Qadisiya, but struggled, especially after Athbi Shehab received a red card in the first half.

Al-Arabi is now hoping for a “gift” from its traditional rival to stop “Al-Abyad” and revive its title hopes. Kuwait Club will face Al-Qadisiya in the next round, before meeting Al-Arabi in the final round.

“Al-Akhdar” struggled to cope with the challenges faced during the “Derby” match against Al-Qadisiyah, particularly after Badr Al-Mutawa was injured in the first half and goalkeeper Khaled Al-Rashidi was sent off at the beginning of the second half.

Al-Arabi may have been affected by the absence of Nigerian Anayo Ayewala, a key attacking player, while Moroccan Hamza Khaba did not perform at his best. “Al-Akhdar” lost focus and failed to capitalize on the numerical advantage, showing signs of impatience.

In the relegation league, Khaitan achieved a valuable 1-0 victory over Al-Jahra, securing second place with 21 points. It benefited from Al-Shabab’s stumble against Kazma, who won 2-0. As a result, “Sons of Al-Ahmadi” fell to third place with 20 points.

Al-Shabab and Al-Jahra have been relegated to the first division for the next season, 2024-2025.
