Kuwait car rental offices block contracts for customers with unpaid traffic fines

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 27: Car rental offices and companies in Kuwait have begun refusing to finalize rental contracts for individuals with outstanding traffic violations, following the activation of an electronic link between the General Traffic Department’s violation system and the systems used by car rental businesses.

According to a source, the new system allows car rental offices and companies to check a customer’s traffic record and identify any unpaid violations. If outstanding fines are found, the rental contract cannot be completed and the vehicle will not be handed over until the violations are settled and the related “block” is removed from the individual’s record.

Once the fines are paid and the block is lifted, the customer can proceed with completing the rental procedures and receive the vehicle. The measure forms part of the Ministry of Interior’s efforts, through the General Traffic Department, to strengthen mechanisms for collecting outstanding traffic fines and prevent their accumulation.

The source said the electronic integration represents an additional step in Kuwait’s digital fine-collection system, allowing violations to be checked more quickly and payment procedures to be facilitated. It also strengthens electronic coordination between government systems and private-sector entities providing vehicle-related services, in line with the Ministry of Interior’s efforts to accelerate digital transformation and improve services provided to the public.
