KUWAIT CITY, Nov 7: The State of Kuwait has called for reinforcing United Nations mechanisms to monitor Islamophobia and address acts of hatred against Muslims, emphasizing its full support for the work of UN Special Rapporteurs in combating all forms of discrimination and intolerance.
This statement was delivered yesterday evening by Abeer Al-Muzain, Diplomatic Attaché of Kuwait’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, before the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, which oversees social, humanitarian, and cultural matters. Speaking during discussions on the agenda item “Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination,” Al-Muzain stated that, “The State of Kuwait believes that human diversity is a source of strength, not division, and that respecting differences is the path to achieving cohesion and peace.” She highlighted that Kuwait is home to more than 170 nationalities, living together in a harmonious society that reflects values of tolerance and justice.
Al-Muzain expressed concern over the rise of Islamophobia and religious hate speech, warning that these trends threaten social cohesion and undermine the principles of human dignity and respect.
She praised the efforts of the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Nazila Ghanea, for drawing attention to the alarming increase in anti-Muslim hatred. Ghanea’s recent reports noted that “Islamophobia is currently the fastest-growing form of religious discrimination worldwide.”
Al-Muzain also welcomed the appointment of Miguel Moratinos as the United Nations Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, expressing hope that his work will help strengthen values of tolerance and mutual respect among different peoples and religions.
