KUWAIT CITY, Sept 24: Kuwait’s General Department of Narcotics Control has foiled an attempt to smuggle approximately 47 kilograms of crystal meth and 45 liters of raw liquid used in its manufacture through the Abdali border crossing, authorities said.
The operation was carried out under the direct supervision of First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahd Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah and came as a continuation of an earlier case involving the manufacture and trafficking of crystal meth at a farm in the Kabd area.
The General Department of Narcotics Control, in cooperation and coordination with the General Administration of Customs, arrested a member of a network involved in the smuggling, manufacture and distribution of narcotic substances.
Following search and investigation operations, security personnel set up a carefully planned ambush after learning that the suspect was returning to Kuwait from Iraq through the Abdali border crossing.
The suspect’s vehicle was searched upon arrival, resulting in the seizure of approximately 47 kilograms of crystal meth and 45 liters of raw liquid used in the manufacture of psychoactive substances. The materials had been concealed inside the vehicle’s chassis in specially prepared hidden compartments.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had been traveling by land to the Mahshahr area in Iran to meet a drug trafficker who was responsible for concealing the shipments inside the vehicle. The suspect would then return through Iraq to Kuwait and deliver the shipment to another suspect who had previously been arrested in connection with the case.
The previously arrested suspect had been apprehended at his residence in the Saad Al-Abdullah area for allegedly manufacturing crystal meth at a farm in the Kabd area and trafficking in narcotic substances.
According to the investigation, the shipments were delivered to the previously arrested suspect, who would unload them at one of the farms, manufacture crystal meth and distribute it through trafficking networks.
The arrested suspect confessed to carrying out more than 24 smuggling operations over a period of two years. The operations included transporting shipments into Saudi Arabia, where individuals linked to another suspect would receive the vehicle, unload its cargo and then return the vehicle to him before he headed back to Kuwait.
The General Department of Narcotics Control said it is continuing efforts to track down the remaining members of the network and identify its wider connections.
The department said legal measures would be taken against all those involved and that efforts would continue to cut off the sources of the network’s activities in order to protect community security and public safety.
