Kuwait Braces for Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds, and Falling Temperatures

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 18: The Meteorological Department has announced that the country is currently experiencing unstable weather conditions, with chances of scattered thunderstorms that may be heavy at times, particularly in the southern and coastal regions. These conditions are expected to persist until the early hours of Friday morning. Moderate northwesterly winds are blowing across the country and are forecast to gradually become more active, with gusts reaching up to 60 kilometers per hour, resulting in high sea waves.

Acting Director of the Meteorological Department, Darrar Al-Ali, explained that weather maps and numerical forecasting models indicate the country is being affected by the extension of a surface high-pressure system from the northwest, accompanied by a cold air mass. This is occurring simultaneously with a deep low-pressure system in the upper layers of the atmosphere, leading to the formation of low and medium-level clouds, interspersed with cumulonimbus clouds capable of producing rainfall and thunderstorms.

According to Al-Ali, the weather on Thursday will be cool and partly cloudy to cloudy. Winds will be northerly to northwesterly, light to moderate in strength, occasionally becoming active at speeds ranging between 15 and 50 kilometers per hour. There remains a chance of scattered rainfall, which may at times be accompanied by thunderstorms, especially over the southern and coastal areas. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 13 and 15 degrees Celsius. Sea conditions will be moderate to rough, with wave heights between 3 and 6 feet.

He added that weather conditions tonight will remain unstable, with skies cloudy to partly cloudy. Winds will shift between northeasterly and northwesterly directions and will be moderate to brisk, at times becoming strong, with speeds between 20 and 65 kilometers per hour. There is a continued likelihood of thunderstorms, which may be heavy at times, particularly in the southern and coastal regions. Light fog may also form in some areas. Minimum temperatures are expected to range between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius, while sea conditions will remain moderate to rough, with waves reaching 4 to 7 feet.

Al-Ali stated that on Friday, the weather will turn cool to cold, with cloud cover gradually decreasing and chances of rain diminishing. Northwesterly winds will continue, moderate to brisk and occasionally strong, with speeds between 20 and 60 kilometers per hour, potentially causing dusty conditions in open areas. Daytime temperatures are forecast to range between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. The sea will remain moderate to rough, with wave heights between 4 and 7 feet.

He further noted that Friday night will be cold, with light to moderate northwesterly winds blowing at speeds of 12 to 35 kilometers per hour. There is a chance of light fog forming in some areas during the late night and early morning hours. Minimum temperatures are expected to drop to between 6 and 8 degrees Celsius, while sea conditions will ease to light to moderate, with waves between 2 and 4 feet.

Looking ahead to Saturday, Al-Ali said the weather will be generally cool, with northwesterly to variable winds that are light to moderate in speed, ranging from 6 to 28 kilometers per hour. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius, and the sea will be light to moderate, with wave heights of 1 to 3 feet.

As for Saturday night, he indicated that conditions will turn colder, with northwesterly to variable winds remaining light to moderate, blowing between 8 and 30 kilometers per hour. Some scattered clouds are expected to appear, while minimum temperatures will range between 5 and 7 degrees Celsius. Sea conditions will continue to be light to moderate, with wave heights between 1 and 4 feet.
